Champions Of The
Young & Business-Savvy
After being established in the year 2000, the Young Entrepreneurs
Association Brunei Darussalam (YEAB) has grown within the Sultanate
as the voice of the next generation of the Business Community.
Looking at the conception of YEAB, it is very easy to see where the
roots of the association began and understand the core values which
have resulted from the founding of the organisation. Initially
beginning as a discussion amongst friends and acquaintances that
were foraying into the business world, they shared their
difficulties, frustrations and solutions to the different trials
that were faced before them. Along with the challenges of
establishing themselves and their respective business, the added
contention of trying to gain recognition for their efforts and
achievements as opposed to their relative youth made it even more
difficult to be taken seriously. Some of the more prevalent problems
to arise were those of coming back to Brunei Darussalam and having
to resettle into a lifestyle that is different to what they were
exposed to when living abroad, taking over or joining a family
business which has long been established and trying to incorporate
new innovations and technology in the management of such a business.
This year marks the 5th Anniversary of the YEAB since it
was conceived as one of the Sultanate’s deliverables at the APEC SME
Business Forum, which saw a live telecast of the conference which
involved Young Entrepreneurs form Australia, Thailand, Canada and
Brunei Darussalam. Within Asean there is increasing emphasis placed
on the youth, as they constitute 40 per cent of the Population
within Asean. Having a formal association set in place participation
and comments, both when traveling abroad and within the Sultanate is
valued, one such example was a dialogue session held between the
Ministry of Communication and the Young Entrepreneurs Association to
gain a better understanding of the Ministry of Communication’s
vision and to see whether there were any areas where the members of
YEAB were able to join in and assist the ministry in realizing their
vision. The YEAB since its inception during the APEC Summit 2000 has
garnered influence, allowing its members to highlight initiatives
that would normally not be heard or entertained when taken up by its
members individually. As a formal collective the association is also
able to pool not only its resources together to help one another,
but its network allows those who have been exposed in their
respective fields to share their experience which could indirectly
benefit other members of the association.
Another benefit reaped from the members is a cooperative and healthy
competitive spirit that exists amongst its members, where by if a
particular member of the association succeeds, their efforts
inspires and motivates other members of the association to achieve
similar standards if not exceed the accomplishments of their peers.
Conversely if a member of the association was to fall behind, the
members shall endeavour to assist their affiliates. Being a Formal
Association, the succession that has been set in place, allows the
contact and networks which have been built under the banner of the
YEAB remains, allowing the future members access to information that
has been gathered and collected by predecessors. The focus of YEAB
which is business, particularly young people in business are looking
to hold more events in the near future, which could prove to be
helpful to entrepreneurs in Brunei Darussalam, who are looking to
establish themselves or those who are already established to break
into the Asean market.

YEAB To Co-Organise
Asia-Europe Forum
The Young Entrepreneur Association of Brunei (YEAB) agreed to co-organise
the Asian European Young Entrepreneurs Forum (AEYEF) along with the
Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources, later this year. The
forum aims to facilitate an open dialogue and exchange of views on
the varying business cultures in Asia and Europe. It also aims to
help young entrepreneurs build business networks and links and gain
better insights into the present status of tomorrow’s key business
sectors. YEAB members attended an activities meeting recently, where
social and business events were discussed and organised. Lisa Dato
Paduka Ibrahim, the President of YEAB, said the mixture of social
and business events is intended to strike a balance between social
and professional contacts and to help members to network. Among the
events were workshops, which relate to the business process, which
will assists members with the management of their businesses.
Informal dialogue sessions with five government ministries were
proposed to help members gain an insight on each ministry and their
vision, and help realize it. To outline potential future
opportunities for Young Entrepreneurs in Brunei Darussalam, meetings
with prominent figures in Brunei have also been planned.
